The character and purpose of the institute
The George Bell Institute at the University of Chichester is an international fellowship of scholars, writers and artists. The institute arises from the Christian tradition and is dedicated to the encouragement of creative work by individuals from all backgrounds and traditions in today’s world. It was founded in September 1996 in memory of George Bell, bishop of Chichester, 1929-1958. An internationalist and an ecumenist, Bell is often recalled as a friend of the oppressed, a patron of writers and artists and a scholar and thinker of originality and distinction. The identity of the institute now rests in the shared determination of its fellows to fashion a new language of reflection and involvement, growing not from institutionalised disciplines and relationships but from a generous pursuit of understanding and justice.
